News Update: I don’t have the swine flu but I am 5 foot 5

swineflewDrawing by Jason Rosado

Yesterday I woke up feeling terrible.  Watery eyes, sore throat, nose like a broken pipe awful. I thought it would go away by today but after sleeping 12 hours last night I still felt bad this morning so I decided to try and find a doctor. Apparently going to see a doctor in New York City is like trying to get into a nightclub in New York City: If you don’t know someone or haven’t already been a patient in the past you can’t get in.  So this left me with the walk in clinic on 16th street. 2 hours go by sitting in a chair in the waiting room. I am sneezing but nobody else seems to be so they ask me to please wear a mask which they provide free of charge. I am the only person wearing a mask in the entire waiting room. Not even the nurses are wearing them…just me. I look like the outbreak monkey.  So after 2 hours they finally call me in to weigh me and measure my height. Then I sit in another smaller room for another thirty minutes until finally the doctor comes in and assures me that I don’t in fact have swine flu but rather a virus and terrible allergies. He tells me I have pollen in my eyes and that I should rinse them with baby shampoo and water when I get home. He also tells me that I don’t look like I’m 5 foot 5. I’m not 5 foot 5. The nurse wrote down 5 foot 5 and this causes the doctor to think that I am overweight. He re measures me at 5 foot 9. How the nurse lost 4 inches I’ll never know but the good news is I’m not overweight, I don’t have the swine flu and I’m not 5 foot 5.

Little Ashes: No Limit NO SENSE.

littleI saw this movie Little Ashes with my grandmother because she was good friends with Luis Buñuel who is depicted in the film as a homophobic crazy person. (Which he wasn’t) However Salvador Dali is depicted as an even crazier egomaniac franco supporter (Which he was) The entire film focuses on the love affair between Dali and Garcia Lorca which may or may not have happened but according to this very silly film it involved lots of moonlight swims, poetry and group sex.  An awkward film to see with my Abuela. Robert Pattinson plays Dali as if he was a vampire…surprise surprise. What is up with the long nails in every film Mr Pattinson? Are you that creepy or have you simply not heard of trimmers? Little ashes is a little ridiculous.

Gabriel Barcia-Colombo: 2008 Video Fellow.

Hi Gabriel! Please tell us what are you working on and/or what’s coming up for you.

Currently I am working on a series of video taxidermy time capsules. Each time capsule consists of a different part of my body on video embedded in a suitcase. The suitcases are to be buried and unearthed in the future. I’m interested in preserving the human body digitally…taxidermy with technology

How did you choose your medium and what do you most appreciate about it?

I love working with video as a medium for sculpture and installation. I appreciate the fact that video is such a dynamic interactive medium. I can create sculptures that move, emote and react. Sculptures that are alive.

Do you collect anything?

I collect too many things. From rare hot sauce to old piggy banks to antique glass bell jars. My apartment is a very small Museum of Jurassic Technology.

How do you start on a project?

I always start with a visual. My last project entitled Separation Anxiety actually came to me in a dream. It’s the first time something like this has happened to me. In the dream I was wandering through an art gallery and I saw an exhibit which featured a white suitcase with a portal in which I saw a tiny version of myself floating as if in the womb. I woke up and thought “Wow what a great installation! Too bad It was already made!” and then once I woke up fully realized that it was all in my head. The next day I went out and found an old suitcase at a flea market, spray painted it white and cut out a hole.

What are your goals for the future?

I want to keep making installations until I run out of ideas. I am looking forward to the day where I have no idea what I’ll do next. I also want to show my work all over the world. (Which NYFA has helped with!)

What is one technology that you’d like to see developed?

I would love to see haptics developed futher and incorporated into art installation. Haptic technology refers to technology that interfaces to the user via the sense of touch by applying forcesvibrations, and/or motions to the user. Imagine if we could create art that both physically and emotionally touched an audience.

What is your studio/workspace like?

I currently don’t have a committed studio/workspace but am looking like mad! Have you heard of a good deal? Right now I’m working out of my apartment but the room is getting tinier and tinier.

What advice do you have for young artists?

Make sure you are creating for yourself. Don’t change your art for anyone but yourself.

What role has the NYFA Fellowship played in your life?

The Fellowship has been an amazing opportunity in many ways. I’ve received offers for shows all over the world based on the NYFA fellows listing. I’ve also used the money from the grant to finance the supplies for my installations over the past year. Without this fellowship I may not have been able to create video pieces that integrate screens, projectors and interactive technology.

Blu:Electronic Cigarettes

Electronic Cigarettes are the new rage.  Smokeless, free of tobacco and tar but chock full of nicotine.  How does blu work?

blu works with a small rechargeable battery and a unique, safe replaceable cartridge that contains water, propylene glycol, nicotine, a scent that emulates a tobacco, and other flavorings exclusive to blu. When you inhale it activates the atomizer which releases simulated smoke that is actually water vapor.

Zooey Deschanel Sings, Buys Banjo, Tries on Vintage Clothing (no one is surprised)

Zooey Deschanel can sing about anything and still look cute but in her newest cotton commercial we get to see what Zooey’s life is really like.  From this ad it seems like Zooey’s life quite fanciful. She plays songs on the piano. All her lyrics fit on 2×2 square post its! She walks her fixie bike over to an abandoned parking lot to look for vintage clothing! She buys a banjo! She buys LPS! Then she tries on more vintage clothing in a montage but ultimately choses a sailor’s outfit! Cotton! I sort of expected Ben Gibbard to pop out of an antique piano in a pair of jockeys holding snippets of Devendra Banharts beard and eating a bowl quinoa !
