Digital Disasterpiece
I spent today trying to program video onto a cheap-0 digital photo frame. After 3 hours of working with the digital mess I gave up hanging my head low in defeat. On the way back to my bedroom, I noticed a picture frame set on a bookshelf. Inside the frame was a picture of my sister and I on Halloween. I was dressed like a pirate and my sister, barely a year old sat on my lap in a snug tiger costume. This is the exact moment when I realized that Digital Photo Frames are stupid. The whole point of a picture frame is to capture and showcase one specific memory as a permanent part of your life. It’s a choice, a message to everyone who visits your house that this memory is particularly special to your family. The picture of my sister and I on Halloween lives on this specific bookshelf outside my bedroom. It becomes an architectural addition to the house. The photo in the frame is chosen as a particular memory, not a cycling slideshow of memories from different times and places loaded haphazardly onto some memory card. If I want to take a closer look at the photo in a traditional frame I can pick it up and gaze, I don’t have to wait for the frame to cycle through. The entire point of a picture frame is to establish permanence, to isolate a particular moment as special and digital photo frames completely negate the concept of memory and timelessness.
