Video for New Media
Mondays 6:30-9:20 Instructor: Gabriel Barcia-Colombo email: gabebc.itp@gmail.com
In 1967 the Sony Portapak became the first portable video system available to the public. Suddenly motion pictures became accessible to artists, experimenters and social activists, not simply Hollywood production companies. The introduction of the Portapak had a great influence not only on the development of ITP but also on the way we create, consume and distribute media today. How do we create video that is non-linear yet compelling, interactive yet engaging? The goal of this class is to provide an overview of both the history of video, and its relevance to present day new media. Topics covered include aesthetics and concepts, camera usage, editing, lighting, as well as an introduction to interactive video software such as Jitter and Isadora. Through a series of weekly experiments and assignments, students gain experience with video blogging, short format documentary style, post linear narrative, interactive video installations as well as theatrical video design. Previous video experience is not required and experimentation is highly encouraged! This course meets for 12 sessions beginning Monday, May 17th

Work:
Students should keep an online video blog of their individual films created over the semester, as well as observations and questions raised in class. This blog must be updated every week with new and fascinating material! Classwork will be posted here:
http://videofornewmedia.wordpress.com
Assignments:
Each week, students will create a new video assignment. These assignments include video blogs, installations, and narrative/documentary pieces. Assignments will be screened and critiqued in class on the week they are due. Please come to class ready to present your assignments on laptop or dvd. Video should be rendered and exported before not during class.
Grading:
Grading will be determined as follows:
Assignments and maintaining online journal/blog 60%
In class participation 10%
Final Project 30%
Class Guidelines/Policy:
Students are expected to come to every class and engage actively in discussion. If for some reason you have to go to a wedding or bar mitzvah or a tornado hits your apartment please let me know before the missed class.
Pay attention during class. Laptops may be used to take notes but not during student presentations. If the laptop situation gets out of control and discussion is suffering I will institute a laptop ban in class.
Class Materials: It is a good idea to either do the Max/MSP free 30 day trial or to use the computers in the video lab to do Max homework. You will need to purchase an arduino microcontroller. (Which you can get from the NYU Computer store)
