Video for New Media

Syllabus

Description:

The nature of the class is to provide an overview of video art and its relevance to present day media art. Topics covered include aesthetics and concepts, camera usage, basic editing in Final Cut Pro, DVD studio pro and an introduction to interactive video software such as Jitter. Through a series of weekly experiments and assignments, students gain experience with projection, portable screens and physical sensors to create site-specific and or physical video installations. Previous video experience is not required and experimentation is highly encouraged!

Work:
Students should keep an online video blog of their individual films created over the summer semester, as well as observations and questions raised in class. This blog must be updated every week with new and fascinating material! Get your free blogs here: Tumblr, WordPress, Blogger

Assignments:
Each week, students will create a new video assignment. These assignments include video blogs, installations, and narrative/documentary pieces. Assignments will be screened and critiqued in class on the week they are due. Please come to class ready to present your assignments on laptop or dvd. Video should be rendered and exported before not during class.

Grading:
Grading will be determined as follows:
Assignments and maintaining online journal/blog 60%
In class participation 10%
Final Project 30%

Class Guidelines/Policy:
Students are expected to come to every class and engage actively in discussion. If for some reason you have to go to a wedding or bar mitzvah or a tornado hits your apartment please let me know before the missed class.
Pay attention during class. Laptops may be used to take notes but not during student presentations. If the laptop situation gets out of control and discussion is suffering I will institute a laptop ban in class.

Storyboarding La Jetée	Assignment #1 Due Class 2 Tell the story of how you got to class tonight in 10 still images. This doesn’t necessarily have to be a true story. Remember, experimentation is key.
2 May 21	Review Assignment #1 Eisenstein, Editing, and the Mise en Scene. Becoming a Final Cut Pro: Capture Cut Export!	Assignment #2: Avenues and Intersections Due Class 5, Dailies Due Class 3 In Groups of two create a video art piece or documentary greater than one minute but less than two about a specific intersection in Manhattan.
3May 28	Final Cut Pro	Continue working on Assignment #2 Export final video for Class #4
4 June 2nd	Video Blogs and Embedding Video Online YouTube, Vimeo, Blip, Revver, Tumblr Episodic vs. Documentarians vs. Fakesters Compression and Codecs for the Internet Guest Speaker: The Whetherman	Assignment #3 Due June 11th Choose a style of video blog and create three 1 minute vlogs in that style. OR Create 3 vlogs each in a different style. Post these vlogs on your online journal in sequential order.
5 June 4th	Review Documentary Projects	Continue working on video blog assignment due class #7 (June 11th)
6 June 9th	Max MSP Jitter demo Physical Computing Light.	Labs on using Jitter and setting up Arduino board.
7 June 11th	Review Video Blogs Site Specific Video Installation Video Art Single Channel, Mutli-Channel, Projection	Assignment: Design video art installation proposal. Due Class 8 (June 16th)
8 June 16th	Present Video Art Installation Proposals Guest Speaker Nicole Cohen	Create 10 minute Presentation for Final Project complete with visuals. Due June 18th
9 June 18th	10 Minute Presentations on Final Project	Work on Final Project
10 June 23rd	After Effects Compositing	Continue to work on Final Project
11 June 25th	Dvd Studio Pro Encoding Compressor Menus, stories, slide shows	Work really damn hard on that Final Project
